What do Bob Marley, Willie Nelson, Lindsey Lohan and Glenmorangie Artein have in common? They all are stoned out of their gourds. Unlike the other three stoners however, this one is getting blazed through a very elegant whisky making process with American white oak ex-bourbon casks and Super Tuscan wine casks for 15 years.
This ruby colored little gem from the Glenmo distillery has a very unique stoner connection starting with it's name, "Artein", which means "stone" in Gaelic. Other connections to stone include Glenmorangie's water source (the Tarlogie Spring) that filters through layers of limestone and the iconic ancient Hilton of Cadbol Stone located near the distillery (the inspiration for The Signet).
The Artein is matured in Super Tuscan wine casks which is made in the Tuscan coastal hills that is known for it's stony ground. The vines are forced to take root deep into the soil for nourishment and as a result the grapes ripen with the intense flavor of this unique terrain. It is unreal the amount of red fruits and berries that stand out due to the Super Tuscan wine casks.
The Artein is the third release of the Glenmorangie Private Edition range. Glenmorangie’s Private Edition is an award winning range that allows the Glenmorangie Whisky Creation Team to share rare, limited samples of unique and innovative experimentations from the Highland distillery. The previous Private Edition releases were the Sonnalta PX (a full bodied whisky matured in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks) and the Finealta (a recreation of a 1900's recipe with subtle notes of peat).
I personally enjoy the Artein more than the previous two editions of the Glenmorangie Private range due to it's unique fruitiness and complex palate. I would recommend picking one of these puppies up before they're all gone. It has been available in select stores since February 1st, 2012. If you're looking for it in the Chicagoland area, most of the Binny's locations have it for $79.99.
NOSE: Raspberry, strawberries, cranberries, complex fruity aroma with underlying oakiness
PALATE: Once again, a very unique red berry presence with cherries and milk chocolate
FINISH: Raspberry and lemon sherbert with a lemon zest finish
RATING: 4.2
